What is ADHD

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is one of the most commonly diagnosed developmental conditions in children. While the name might sound serious, it’s important to understand that ADHD is a complex neurobiological condition that affects how a child learns, behaves, and copes with everyday challenges.

What are the main features of ADHD?

ADHD is characterized by three core groups of symptoms:

🍂  Inattention – the child may have difficulty sustaining focus, easily getting distracted, or struggling to complete tasks or follow detailed instructions.

🍂  Hyperactivity – this often shows as constant movement, difficulty staying still or calm, and a high level of energy.

🍂  Impulsivity – acting without thinking, having trouble controlling emotions or behaviors, and often interrupting or acting out.

Not every child with ADHD shows all these symptoms, and their intensity and expression can vary based on individual traits, age, and environment.

How does ADHD affect a child’s life?

Children with ADHD may face challenges not only at school but also in relationships with peers and family members. They might feel misunderstood, experience low self-esteem, or become frustrated when their behaviors are criticized. Support from adults, appropriate strategies, and education about ADHD can significantly improve the child’s quality of life and the wellbeing of the whole family.

Why is early identification important?

Early recognition of ADHD allows for timely support, therapies, and educational accommodations that help the child develop in the best possible way. Early intervention can prevent many difficulties related to misunderstanding or lack of support, which often lead to emotional and social problems.

What to do if you suspect your child has ADHD?

If you notice signs that may indicate ADHD in your child, consider the following steps:

🌱  Observe and note specific behaviors and situations.

🌱  Talk with teachers and caregivers.

🌱  Consult with a specialist—such as a child psychologist or psychiatrist.

🌱  Seek reliable information to better understand ADHD and how to support your child.
