Writing a test

How is ADHD diagnosed?

Getting a diagnosis of ADHD can feel overwhelming for many parents — full of questions, uncertainties, and often mixed emotions. This step, however, can be the key to unlocking the right kind of support for your child and your family.

Is there a test for ADHD?

There’s no single test or scan that can “prove” ADHD. Instead, diagnosis is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the child’s behavior, development, and functioning in different environments — usually at home and in school.

Diagnosis often includes:

🍂  Detailed interviews with parents about the child’s behavior, history, and daily life.

🍂  Reports from teachers or caregivers to see how the child functions outside the home.

🍂  Behavioral questionnaires or rating scales.

🍂  Rule-outs to exclude other causes (like learning disorders, anxiety, or trauma).

🍂  Observation by a trained specialist.

This is usually done by psychologists, pediatricians, or psychiatrists with experience in child development.

Who can make a diagnosis?

In Switzerland, ADHD in children is most commonly diagnosed by qualified mental health professionals. Depending on the individual case and canton, this may include:

🍂  Psychologists (FSP / recognized specialists)

🍂  Child and adolescent psychiatrists

🍂  Pediatricians with additional training and experience in developmental and behavioral issues

🍂  Neuropsychologists

In many situations, a collaborative approach is used — involving psychologists, medical doctors, schools (Schulpsychologischer Dienst), and other specialists working together to gain a full picture of the child’s needs.

Why does the process take time?

Since ADHD overlaps with other conditions and may look different in different children, rushing the diagnosis can lead to misunderstandings or mislabeling. A careful and thoughtful evaluation helps ensure the support your child receives is truly appropriate to their needs.

What happens after a diagnosis?

A diagnosis can be both relieving and confusing. It often brings clarity — helping parents better understand their child — and opens up access to:

🌱  School accommodations and support

🌱  Parenting tools tailored to ADHD

🌱  Therapy options (e.g., behavioral therapy, parent training)

🌱  Medical treatment if appropriate

Remember: a diagnosis is not a label — it’s a starting point for better understanding and connection.
